Actos Side Effects

Comprised of the chemical pioglitazone, actos is used as an anti-diabetes drug. Patients who use this drug must simultaneously adopt a healthy diet and exercise program for the medication to work. Actos was created in 1999 to help diabetics manage their treatment. Since that date, the medication has become the subject of several law suits.

Studies have linked actos use to an increase in the risk of bladder cancer, heart problems and bone fractures.

Rise in Heart Failure

Patients who are taking actos have a higher incidence of heart attacks. In a 2005 clinical study, researchers noted that ten percent of actos patients required an overnight hospital visit for heart failure. In a comparison group on a different diabetic medication, only five percent of patients required overnight hospitalization. After the study came out, the FDA started requiring a warning label on the medication for the risks associated with actos use. Individuals who take actos have a higher rate of fluid retention and edema. These two conditions can worsen the symptoms of congestive heart failure or create heart problems.

Bladder Cancer

In 2011, another warning came out about actos use. The FDA linked using actos to a 40 percent higher risk of bladder cancer among patients. Individuals who took higher doses of the drug or used it for an extended period of time were the primary group of patients affected.

Bone Fractures

Patients who use actos are at a greater risk of fracturing their arms, legs, hands or feet. The increased risk was most apparent in older women. Overall, the risk of bone fractures increased 70 percent in actos users compared to patients taking different drugs.

Actos Side Effects

Actos users are at a higher risk for rapid weight gain, heart failure, high blood sugar and fatigue. Some patients may have problems breathing or suffer from swelling in their hands and feet. In certain cases, patients have reported a rise in muscle pain, dental problems and sore throats. Patients should immediately contact their doctor if the experience blurred vision, increased urination or reddish-colored urine. On occasion, actos can cause liver disease. Symptoms of liver disease include nausea, abdominal pain, jaundice, vomiting and dark urine. Anyone who experiences any of these side effects of actos should immediately contact their doctor for treatment.

Patients may develop an allergy to taking actos. During an allergic reaction, the patient may develop a rash, feel dizziness or find it difficult to breath. Some patients have also reported swelling of their throat, face or tongue when they are having an allergic reaction.
