Ciprofloxacin Side Effects

Ciprofloxacin is used by individuals who have a bacterial infection. Like all antibiotics, ciprofloxacin can only be used to treat bacterial infections. It is not effective against viral infections like the flu or common cold. This medication is a part of a drug class known as quinolone antibiotics. It ends infects by preventing and stopping the growth of any bacteria.

In rare cases, ciprofloxacin can cause tendon damage or ruptures. The risk of problems is higher in individuals who are older than 60 or who have had an organ transplant. Patients who have myasthenia should not take ciprofloxacin because it can cause the medical condition to worsen. This drug should only be taken following a doctor’s orders. Patients who stop treatment too soon may have the bacterial infection come back or develop a resistant strain of bacteria.

Individuals who are taking this drug should tell their doctor about any other medication, over-the-counter drugs or herbal supplements that they are currently taking. Ciprofloxacin can negatively interact with other medications or can become ineffective. Women who are taking birth control should discuss using other contraceptive methods while on ciprofloxacin. Some antibiotics can cause contraceptives to become ineffective. To be safe, women should use an alternate form of birth control while they are on antibiotics.
