Clindamycin Side Effects

Clindamycin is traditionally used to treat bacterial infections. As an antibiotic, this medication is only effective against patients who have bacterial infections. Viruses like the common cold or flu will not be affected by using clindamycin. If patients misuse this antibiotic, it could lead to the drug becoming ineffective.

On rare occasions, using clindamycin may cause a highly rare condition called Clostridium difficil-associated diarrhea. These resistant bacteria may begin growing in the body up to a couple months after clindamycin use is stopped. If patients have using clindamycin in the past, they should look out for signs like abdominal cramps, bloody stools and persistent diarrhea. Individuals who have these symptoms should immediately see a doctor to prevent the symptoms from becoming worse. Some medications like anti-diarrhea drugs or narcotics should not be taken without a doctor’s supervision because they may cause they diarrhea to become worse.

Side Effects

Patients who take clindamycin should discuss with their doctor about the risks of developing a side effect. Some individuals may experience side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, vaginal yeast infection, joint pain or oral thrush. Any white patches in the mouth or unusual vaginal discharge could be a sign of thrush or a yeast infection.
Certain patients might develop dark urine, rashes, itching, dizziness or problems breathing.

Some people may be allergic to clindamycin. Individuals with a history of allergic reactions to lincomycin or similar medications should talk with their doctor before taking clindamycin. If a patient develops rashes, severe dizziness, problems breathing or swelling, they may be having an allergic reaction. Anyone who has an allergic reaction to clindamycin should immediately get emergency medical help.

The majority of side effects associated with using clindamycin include:

– Oral thrush
– Heartburn
– Vomiting
– Nausea
– Changes in the amount of urine
– Severe dizziness
– Joint pain
– Yellowing of the eyes or skin
– Diarrhea
– Dark colored urine
– Vertigo
– Vaginal yeast infections
– White patches in the mouth
– Unusual vaginal discharge
– Rashes or itchy patches of skin
– Difficulties breathing

If you experience any of these side effects, you should immediately report it to you doctor and the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA can be reached at 1-800-FDA-1088. If you experience your side effects in Canada, Health Canada can be found at 1-866-234-2345. Individuals should report the side effects of clindamycin to help make the medication safer for other users.

Patients should always tell their doctor about any allergies they have to prescription drugs or the inactive ingredients. Individuals should also experience any medical history of liver disease, eczema, asthma, stomach problems, kidney disease or colitis. Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should talk to their doctor before using this medication. Clindamycin should only be used when it is clearly needed to prevent problems for the fetus. Studies also show that clindamycin can pass from the mother to child in breast milk. To be extra safe, nursing mothers should schedule an appointment with their doctors to discuss the infant’s risks of side effects.

Like many medications, older adults seem to have a higher risk of developing side effects while taking clindamycin. These patients were also more likely to develop persistent diarrhea.

Anyone who is taking other medications should check with their doctor to prevent any drug interactions. Although most forms of birth control may still work fine, clindamycin may change the effectiveness of contraceptives. Women who are on birth control should use condoms to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. Herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs may also affect clindamycin. Disclose any medications you are taking to your doctor before starting treatment.

Patients who experience any negative side effects should immediately seek out emergency medical care. Although many of the side effects are included on this list, other symptoms are possible. If you experience any symptoms that are unusual, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
