Coumadin Side Effects

Coumadin which is also known as warfarin is used to blood clots and reduce the risk of strokes. This medication can also reduce the risk associated with having an irregular heartbeat or recent heart attacks. Coumadin is an anticoagulant so it keeps the blood from forming clots. With regular use, patients can have blood that runs smoother through their body.

Warnings

This medication can potentially cause fatal bleeding. Since it is effectively a blood thinner, new users can develop blood that is too thin and will not coagulate. This symptom normally occurs with patients that have recently started taking Coumadin or who take too much. Individuals should make sure not to eat too much of foods that are high in vitamin K since vitamin K is a natural anticoagulant. Some common foods that have vitamin K include cabbage, broccoli, green tea, kale or spinach. Large amounts of cranberry juice can also interfere with Coumadin and reduce its efficacy.

Since Coumadin is an anticoagulant, patients need to alert their doctor or dentist before they go into surgery. Without proper measures, patients in surgery may find it difficult to stem their blood losses. In rare cases, Coumadin can cause uncontrolled bleeding that can be fatal.

Coumadin Side Effects

Like any medication, Coumadin contains numerous potential side effects for users. Patients may experience easy bleeding, bruises, unusual pain or a heavy menstrual flow. These symptoms could be a sign that patients are on too large of a dose so they should talk with their doctor immediately. Some patients may suffer from nausea, changes in appetite or chest pain. Coumadin can also make it difficult to swallow or bleed.

Patients that experience bloody vomit, tarry stools, dizziness or tiredness should tell their doctor immediately. Other serious side effects may include jaundice, tissue damage, blurred vision or slurred speech.

Certain individuals may be allergic to Coumadin. In these cases, patients may experience problems breathing, rashes, dizziness or itching. To report side effects, patients can call the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Precautions

Anyone who has had a recent surgery should talk to a doctor before taking Coumadin because it could cause excessive bleeding. Patients who have anemia, liver disease, brain aneurysms, mood disorders or hemophilia should report their medical conditions to their doctor. Alcohol usage can cause excessive thinning of the blood. Patients should avoid using drinking alcohol while on Coumadin to prevent side effects. Excessive alcohol use may also cause bleeding in the stomach. Patients should also always discuss any medications or supplements they are on with their doctor.

Older adults should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of using Coumadin since they are at a higher risk of side effects. Pregnant women should avoid using the drug because it can be potentially fatal for the fetus. Although nursing infants are not normally affected by Coumadin, nursing mothers should always talk to their doctor first before breastfeeding.

If you or a loved one experiences any side effects, you should immediately see your doctor for further treatment. Each individual reacts to drugs differently. Although this list includes many of the side effects, you may experience the medication differently than someone else. If you have any symptoms that are out of the ordinary, you should consult with a doctor as soon as possible.
