Depakote Side Effects

Depakote is comprised of valproate semisoduim. It has been sold around the world as a treatment for manic episodes in bipolar disorder. In the United States, it is sometimes prescribed as a treatment of depression, autism, migraines, epilepsy and neuropathy.

Precautions Before Taking Depakote

Anyone who is on other medications or supplements should tell their doctor before taking Depakote. Certain medications can cause negative side effects when taken in conjunction with Depakote. Patients who have a history of alcohol abuse, dementia, dehydration or kidney disease should also tell their doctor before being prescribed Depakote. Older patients should be especially careful when taking Depakote because they are at a higher risk of side effects.

Depakote Side Effects

The worst side effect associated with using Depakote is an increased risk of birth defects such as anencephaly or spina bifida. In addition, adults who take Depakote may experience vomiting, loss of appetite or dizziness. They may find it difficult to maintain their balance and suffer from decreased coordination. Depakote is also associated with liver damage, hallucinations, jaundice, drowsiness and fever. Some patients may experience dark urine, constipation, diarrhea, weird dreams or unusual bleeding.

Certain individuals may also have an allergy to Depakote. If the patient has an allergy, they may develop problems breathing, dizziness, rashes, itching or swelling.

Depakote Usage in Young Children and Adults

Side effects of Depakote are more likely in children under the age of two who have other medical problems. Continued use of Depakote has been linked to an increase in potentially fatal liver problems. Anyone taking Depakote should have tests performed to check for liver damage. Signs of liver damage include swelling of the face, vomiting or fatigue. Depakote can also cause pancreatitis and abdominal pain.

Patients who are taking Depakote should only do so under the supervision of a qualified physician. Oral doses must be swollen whole and should never be chewed or crushed. For best results, patients should take their dose of Depakote at the same time each day so that the level of Depakote in the blood is constant.

Drug Interactions

Patients should alert their physician or pharmacist if they are taking any medication that might cause drowsiness. These medications include antihistamines, tranquilizers, narcotics, sedatives or muscle relaxants. Since Depakote can affect the outcome of certain tests, patients should alert their doctor before undergoing any laboratory testing. Since it is impossible to list every medication that may interact with Depakote, patients should always tell their doctor every over-the-counter drug, supplement or medication that they are currently using. Although over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements can be purchased without a prescription, they can still cause harmful side effects and drug interactions.

Anyone who is taking Depakote should schedule a doctor’s appointment if they have any negative side effects. These symptoms can be a sign of more serious problems like liver or pancreas damage. Patients should only take Depakote under a doctor’s supervision. Although this contains the majority of side effects associated with Depakote, there is always a possibility that there will be other negative symptoms. If the patient experiences any symptoms that are out of the ordinary, they should discuss them with their doctor and seek medical treatment.
