Levaquin Side Effects

Levaquin is considered a type of antibiotic known as a fluoroquinolones. This antibiotic is intended to treat bacterial infections that have not responded to other forms of treatment. Although it is sold under brand names like EVO and Tavanic, the most popular name for it is levaquin. Individuals who take levaquin should be especially careful. This medication has negative interactions with several herbal supplements and drugs. When used in conjunction with other chemicals, levaquin can cause irregular heartbeats and can stop the blood from coagulating.

The FDA requires levaquin to carry two Black box warning labels. One of these labels is because levaquin tends to cause myasthenia gravis to worsen. Patients may experience unusually weak or find it difficult to breathe. The other Black box warning refers to levaquin’s tendency to cause ruptures in the tendons. This can occur while the patient is on levaquin or several months after taking it. The risk of tendon ruptures is higher in patients who are on steroids, have organ transplants or are elderly. If patients experience any swelling, aches or inflammation, they should immediately visit a doctor or emergency room.

Warnings

Patients who have a hypersensitivity to quinolone or levofloxacin should avoid using levaquin. This drug should be used cautiously in patients who have seizures, liver problems or epilepsy. Pregnant or nursing women should also be cautious in using levaquin. This drug can be transferred through breast milk or through the umbilical cord and cause problems for the baby. It can result in severe side effects for the baby including birth defects or miscarriages.

Levaquin Usage in Pediatric Patients

This medication can also cause complications for infants who are nursing and young children. Levaquin has not been approved for use in children and should be avoided unless explicitly prescribed by a doctor. Children who take levaquin may develop musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis or tendonopathy. Children who use this drug can develop permanent and irreversible joint damage. There have also been several fatalities reported in children who used the chemical levofloxacin.

Patients should always disclose any medications that they are on to their doctor before taking levaquin. They should also report any vitamins, herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs that they are currently taking. Certain medications can cause severe drug interactions and should be avoided while the patient is using levaquin. Any patient who experiences side effects should discuss the possibility with their doctor of taking other drugs or treatment with their doctor. People with severe side effects should immediately visit their physician or an emergency room. Although most side effects are minor, there are serious problems associated with using levaquin. If you or a loved one has a serious side effect, you should get help as quickly as possible.
