Minocycline Side Effects

Individuals who have a bacterial infection or acne might be prescribed minocycline as a treatment. This medication is an antibiotic and is only effective against bacterial infections. Any viral infections like a cold will not respond to medication. On occasion, doctors might prescribe minocycline for off-labels uses like treating rheumatoid arthritis.

This medication should only be used under a doctor’s supervision. Patients who are prescribed minocycline should make sure to take all of the medication prescribed by their doctor. By stopping treatment too early, patients can make it so antibiotics are less effective and their infection may return. Anyone who has a history of kidney disease should tell their doctor since minocycline can cause kidney problems.

Minocycline Side Effects

Many patients who take minocycline experience symptoms like vomiting or nausea. These symptoms can be lessened by eating a light snack before taking the medication. In some cases, patients may feel drowsy, unsteady or feel dizzy. Individuals who are taking minocycline occasionally report symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, diarrhea, coughs and muscle pains. If patients use minocycline for an extended period of time, they are at an increased risk of vaginal yeast infections or oral thrush.

Although minocycline does not normally cause symptoms, they do occur on occasion. The overall side effects may include some of the following symptoms:

Patients who have any of these rare side effects should always report them to their doctor. These symptoms could be a sign of a worse problem. Any side effect needs to be addressed immediately by a qualified health care professional.

Certain individuals may be allergic to minocycline. Patients who have an allergic reaction might have trouble breathing, develop a rash or jaundice. Allergic reactions can cause severe dizziness, irregular heartbeats, dark urine, skin lesions or swelling. Anyone who has a severe allergic reaction should immediately receive emergency care services.

Precautions Before Taking Minocycline

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should tell their doctor before taking minocycline. Although it does not seem to harm infants, patients should check with their doctor first to ensure that there will not be any issues. Antibiotics can also affect the efficacy of contraceptives. Women who take birth control should use backup contraceptive methods while they are using minocycline.

While taking minocycline, individuals should avoid drinking alcohol because it can increase symptoms of drowsiness or fatigue. Taking minocycline can also cause photosensitivity and an increased risk of sun burns. Patients should avoid spending time in the sun or in a tanning bed while they are on medication.

Anyone who is on other medications or is about to have surgery should always tell their doctor first. Although minocycline can normally be taken during surgery, it is important to clear it with your doctor before having any surgeries. Some adolescents and young adults who take minocycline have reported a rise in tooth discoloration. If this happens, visit your doctor and discuss possible solutions.

Always Talk to Your Doctor

Patients who are taking minocycline need to tell their doctor about any medications they are on. Certain medications can become ineffective while on minocycline and can impede with the antibiotics ability to work. Although side effects are rare, they can happen. Patients who experience any side effects should immediately contact their doctor or emergency care professional. Only a doctor can tell you if your side effects are serious or if you require a new treatment. Unless directed to by their doctor, patients should continue taking minocycline until their prescription is empty. If patients stop taking their medication early, it can cause the bacteria to begin growing again.
