Resveratrol Side Effects

Resveratrol is actually an ingredient that is common in many of the foods humans eat. Individuals can find resveratrol in red wine, mulberries and grapes. Small amounts of this chemical can also be found in peanuts. People who take resveratrol believe that it can lower the levels of bad cholesterol in the body and increase the amount of good cholesterol. By doing this, resveratrol is thought to prevent the hardening of the arteries and some forms of cancer.

Although the benefits of resveratrol are not entirely known, some studies suggest that this chemical may have slight estrogen-like properties. This hormone plays a key role in resveratrol’s ability to lower pain and reduce inflammation in the body. Currently, no medical benefits of resveratrol can be stated for certain. As a supplement, resveratrol is not the focus of research or clinical trials. It is less regulated than typical prescription drugs and can vary in the dosage amount within each capsule.

Since resveratrol has not received enough scientific research, it can be definitively said to treat high cholesterol, heart problems or cancer. Patients should ask their doctor before taking this supplement and report any side effects to their physician.

resveratrol side effectsResveratrol Side Effects

Many of the side effects of resveratrol are not yet known. As a supplement, the side effects of resveratrol have not been closely researched like other forms of medications.

Effects research does show:

– Stomach Cramping
– Diarrhea
– Blood Thinning – can cause uncontrollable bleeding
– Restricts Folic Acid Absorption

Studies show is that resveratrol has a pronounced anti-platelet effect. Patients who are on blood thinners should not take resveratrol. If they do, they may develop uncontrollable bleeding or easy bruising. The risk of easy bleeding increases if the patient takes more than 100 milligrams each day.

Resveratrol may also cause an individual to have severely low blood pressure. This effect is good for patients who start out with high blood pressure, but individuals with hypotension should be wary. Low blood pressure can carry just as many risks as high blood pressure.

Like mentioned before, resveratrol can be an estrogen agonist. It will promote and increase the effects of estrogen in the body. If the individual has certain kinds of tumors or cancers, their medical condition could be worsened.

Precautions

Resveratrol does contain certain amounts of estrogen and estrogen-like chemicals. Anyone who has a medical condition that is sensitive to hormone intake should not take this medication. People should avoid using resveratrol if they have uterine fibroids, breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine cancer or ovarian cancer.

This medication has not been proven safe to use during pregnancy.  Patients should always talk with their doctor first. If women who are pregnant are told to intake more resveratrol, they should make sure to do so in non-alcoholic forms. Food sources like red wine are not advisable during pregnancy and can cause Sudden Infant Death syndrome.

side effects dangerAnyone who is on any form of liver medication should talk to a doctor before taking resveratrol. This medication can decrease the effectiveness of the liver. Over time, the body may suffer from a buildup of the medication and develop negative side effects. Some of the medications that should never be used at the same time as resveratrol are: triazolam, lovastatin, fexofenadine, ketoconazole and itraconazole.

Medications like anticoagulants should also be avoided while using resveratrol. Resveratrol may make the blood clot slowly. When combined with anticoagulant medications, the patient could bleed severely until medical treatment was found.  Do NOT take this supplement at least two weeks before surgery.

Conclusion

Anyone who plans on taking resveratrol should talk to their doctor first. This supplement has not been extensively researched and could cause a host of unknown side effects. Patients should get their doctors approval before taking the supplement and report any problems that they may have. You should also tell your doctor about any food or medication allergies that you have. Like any medication or supplement, resveratrol can potentially cause severe allergic reactions. If you think that you are experiencing an allergic reaction, seek medical care as soon as possible.
