Ritalin Side Effects

Ritalin is made up of the chemical methylphenidate and is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Doctors may also prescribe it for narcolepsy, depression, lethargy or obesity. The primary use of Ritalin is to treat ADHD.

This drug increases activity in the central nervous system and promote alertness. It can help patients to pay attention better and stay awake longer. Although there have been many studies on the short term side effects scientists do not know how it effects the body in the long term. Since scientists do not know long term side effects, this drug should never be prescribed for any child under the age of six.

Ritalin During Pregnancy

The FDA lists Ritalin as a pregnancy category C drug. This means that pregnant or nursing mothers should only take Ritalin if their doctor thinks that the benefits are greater than any potential risks. Any chemical a mother uses can be passed to her child through breast milk or the umbilical cord. Since the long term effects of Ritalin are unknown, women should discuss the right choice for them before using this medication.

Contraindications and Drug Interactions

Ritalin should not be used with any antidepressants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Patients who have heart or liver problems should not be prescribed Ritalin. In addition, anyone who has hypertension, nervousness or agitation may not be a good candidate for this medication.

Ritalin may interact with drugs like pemoline or SSRIs. Users who drink alcohol while on Ritalin will suffer from higher levels of blood plasma and could suffer further side effects. Individuals who take multiple medications at once could end up developing problems like hypothermia or hypertension. On rare occasions, patients who take SSRIs and Ritalin may end up suffering from convulsions.

Potential Addiction Issues

Ritalin is considered an addictive drug. Individuals who stop taking Ritalin may suffer from drug withdrawals. To prevent this from occurring, patients should be gradually weaned off of Ritalin. This medication is often misused by drug addicts and adolescents. These individuals use Ritalin to produce a sense of euphoria and state of alertness. Patients should not be prescribed Ritalin if they have a history of drug abuse. Ritalin is only intended to be used according to a doctor’s orders. This medication should never be sold, given away or used without a prescription. Abuse of drugs containing methylphenidate can cause the onset of a heart attack. Patients should never use Ritalin without a doctor’s supervision.

If patients experience any side effects, they should report them to their doctor right away. Many of the side effects associated with Ritalin are extremely common among patients. Although many side effects will go away over time, some can be serious or life threatening. The most common serious side effect among children is stunted growth. Children who use this drug for extended periods of time will grow up to be shorter than they would have been without using Ritalin.
