Sertraline Side Effects

Sertraline is often prescribed to patients who are suffering from depression. As an antidepressant, this drug works to increase the natural levels of serotonin in the body. Scientists believe that serotonin is responsible for feelings of well-being and happiness. Patients with depression often have lowered levels of serotonin. As a result, they are prescribed sertraline to help them manage their feelings of depression. On occasion, this medication can also be prescribed to patients who have premenstrual disorders, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.

On rare occasions, patients may suffer from severe side effects. The risks of having a severe side effect are heightened if the patient already has a history of medical problems. In rare cases, patients may suffer from speech difficulties, hair loss, photosensitivity, jaundice, galactorrhea, gynecomastia, breast tenderness, muscle pain, incontinence or hypertrichosis. Any patient who experiences any of these symptoms should immediately visit their doctor for additional assistance.

Allergic Reactions

To reduce the incidence of an allergic reaction, tell your doctor about any allergies that you have had in the past. Individuals who have an allergic reaction may develop a rash or unusual itching. Their throat, face, hands or tongue swell and cause a hoarse sounding voice. Some patients may also find it difficult to breathe and develop tightness in their chest. If you or a loved one experiences any of these symptoms, you should seek medical help as soon as possible. Severe allergies can cause death so any reaction should be taken care of immediately.

Using sertraline during pregnancy can increase the risk of limb defects, anal atresia and other medical problems. Women should avoid using sertraline if they are pregnant or could become pregnant. Since sertraline is present in breast milk, women who are nursing should talk to their doctor before taking sertraline.

Children who take sertraline may experience more serious side effects than an adult would. They may suffer from increased hyperactivity, sinus inflammation or aggressiveness. To ensure the safety of your child, talk with a doctor about the potential risks they may face by taking this medication.

Sertraline should only be used under a doctor’s supervision. Patients should carefully weigh the risks versus the benefits before taking this medication. They should also tell their doctor all of the herbal supplements and medications they are currently using. Certain chemicals can negatively interact with sertraline and should be avoided while patients are on the drug. If you or a loved one experiences any serious side effects, you should seek emergency care immediately.
